Today we're going to cover something that's very DIY in nature, but it falls well outside of the realm of "home improvement." Instead, it deals with a decidedly DIY approach to a medical issue. More specifically, one involving our beloved canine daughter, Lulu.

The homeopathic remedy I'm covering today deals with a very common genetic issue in dogs called "cherry eye." Let me warn you, some of the photos that are in this post can be unsettling. But allow me to assure you, even if they look gross, as long as the animals afflicted with this condition are treated in a timely manner, the animals are in no way in pain.

Cherry eye is actually a very simple issue involving the weakening, stretching, or detachment of anchoring tissue on an ocular gland that's sometimes referred to as a "third eyelid." In dogs this third eyelid plays a role that promotes oxygen supply and tear production to the eye. When working correctly, the third eyelid stays tucked away and out of sight. However, when anchoring tissue is not fully doing its job, this third eyelid can protrude from behind the eye and will be visible as a red or pink mass that partially obscures the corner of the eye.

Example of Cherry Eye in a Bulldog

Our story of cherry eye actually starts several years ago, in fact the very week we adopted Lulu. As new pet parents of Lulu, and having just lost Oliver after a long medical fight against cancer, Wendy and I were fragile yet optimistic about adopting our new girl. She seemed quite happy and healthy, albeit a little neurotic at times. One day, shortly after our adoption, we decided to head to PetSmart to have Lulu's nails trimmed and pick up a few supplies. Little did we know just how much Lulu hated, and I mean HATED, having her nails trimmed.

After several minutes of struggle that began to make our pet parent stomachs turn, they opted to take her to a back room to "calm her." In retrospect, we should have listened to our gut and called the whole thing off, but we didn't. We'll never make this mistake again, I can tell you that. When Lulu emerged with her trimmed nails, she also had a red blob over her eyelid.

We were shocked, as she hadn't arrived with this condition. The store staff were somewhat dismissive and said, "Oh, that was there when you brought her in." You should have seen how upset Wendy and I were. As I said, never again!

The PetSmart vet who was in the office gave us a "complimentary exam" and checked Lulu over due to our concern/upset. After a few minutes he diagnosed her with "cherry eye," a common and genetic issue impacting young dogs of certain breeds, including pugs. He said, "Surgery is really the only fix, and that will be about $800." Furious, and wanting a second opinion from our own vet, we went home...feeling like the worst pet parents in the world. How could we have let this happen?!?

On the way home Lulu was her normal drooling and neurotic car riding self, which made us feel a little better. And when we arrived home we immediately made an appointment with our vet, Dr. Farrell. We really didn't know what to expect, so I started looking around at various online resources. Apparently pet ailment websites aren't nearly as alarmist as human sites, because not once did any of them lead me to believe Lulu was sure to be done in by some rare disease. Instead, everything mostly said the same things. Through all of the references to surgery, antibiotics, and steroids, I noticed one thing that piqued my interest. It seemed that some people had luck through relaxation and gentle massage to repair the issue.

I gave it a shot with the instructions I found online and was able to correct the issue with the protruding gland. When we took Lulu to the vet the next day for her checkup, our vet almost didn't believe us that it had happened. She had never heard of cherry eye showing up due to thrashing trauma, and she also had never heard of correction through massage. However, she was very open to the idea and figured it was worth just keeping an eye on it. (We still think she just didn't believe it was actually cherry eye, especially with no photo proof.)

Fast forward nearly three years, Lulu has been cherry eye free after my massage fix...until this past weekend. I was walking out of our office and Lulu came prancing down the hall looking at me with a pink blob over here eye. I immediately knew what it was. This time I thought, "I'm going to actually get a photo of this!" Here's what I saw.

I don't know what she did, how she twisted, what angle she looked in, what squirrel caused her to bug out, or what anomaly occurred, but Lulu's third eyelid had made a reappearance. However, this time I was calm, cool, and collected. I knew of a way to potentially fix the issue on my own, and worst case, I knew we could always take her to an eye specialist to have the glad placed back in its appropriate place.

As a calm pet parent (good thing I was the only one home, Wendy isn't nearly as calm in these scenarios) I grabbed a clean cloth and dampened it with warm water.

Then the hard part, calming the beast. I worked to calm our normally somewhat spastic dog. That, in itself, was no easy task. After several minutes of tummy rubs and calm petting, I had myself a relaxed puppy.

Using the warm cloth I gently laid it over her closed eyelid on the affected eye. After allowing it to warm the area for a few minutes to promote tear production and lubricate the area (still rubbing her tummy), I began to slowly massage the area where the gland had protruded. If she had issues with dry eyes or no tear production, we'd also use eye drops to help promote a more slippery surface. Removing the damp cloth, I *very* gently moved my thumb over her eyelid, putting almost no pressure on her eye, from the center of her closed eye towards the corner of her eye near her nose. I repeated this several times until I felt the third eyelid almost suck back into the right place. I massaged just a little bit more because I think she was sort of enjoying the attention, then I stopped to take a look.

When Lulu opened her eye the pink mass had disappeared. No longer was her third eyelid protruding in a rather awkward manner. Best of all, I was able to correct it on my own before Wendy arrived home. The last thing I wanted was for Wendy to walk in, freak out, and then have her third eyelid pop out. I'd have to work on two patients at that point.

I believe the massage technique is a good option, but timing and severity of the issue is critical to success. The longer the issue is left untreated, the less likely the massage will be to correct the gland's location. Also, if it's a complete detachment of the anchoring tissue, there will be nothing that keeps the gland in place, so after massage, it will just pop back out. It's also true that this approach may not be resolving the root cause of the issue, and it may continue to occur at random points in the future, but thus far we've been nearly three full years since the last occurrence. If we can continue on that track record I think we're in pretty darn good shape. In the worst case scenario the issue can't be corrected using this homeopathic remedy or it keeps appearing frequently. In that case we'll need to pursue a surgical remedy. But we'll cross that bridge if we come to it.

One thing to note regarding corrective surgery on cherry eye are the typical approaches a surgeon may take. There are two primary approaches to correcting cherry eye from a surgical perspective. One deals with correcting the issue and securing the glad in the correct location, while another deals with surgical removal of the gland. If given the option, absolutely go with the first approach. The gland is essential for tear production and will cause many long term issues if removed. Typically it's only removed if the gland has been damaged by being left exposed for too long, so it's important to deal with this issue much sooner than later.

You need to do what you're comfortable with, and we're by no means medical experts on the subject. But after talking it over with our trusted vet, we're comfortable with this approach when the need arises. Also, if this happens to your dog, even if the massage corrects the issue, make sure you still take your pup to the vet for a checkup. There can be underlying causes of cherry eye that still need to be investigated to ensure there are not more serious problems at play.

I hope our tale of Lulu's cherry eye and our ultimate home remedy fix will come in handy if you are ever in a situation where you have to deal with cherry eye. I'm very interested to know, have you ever had a dog that has had this issue? What sorts of things caused it? And if you went the surgical route, what were your experiences? Anything you can tell us to watch out for or advice you can give is very welcome.

This is COOL. I've honestly never heard of anyone "fixing" their dog's cherry eye on their own. I've seen some really angry red cherry eyes and I wonder if they ever would have gotten that bad if people would/coudl just massage them back into place.

Thankfully Tass is made up of a bunch of breeds not particularly susceptible for cherry eye. Ectropion, on the other hand...

I can confirm this method works !
At the present time I have a ScottieX
in my care who has a history of cherry eye.
Which appeared today without warning, I was not able to contact the owner to find
out if she had medication on hand.so I decided to go ahead and test the theory...within an hour the eye returned back to normal...it is was a huge relief because Jack only has one eye and any threat to it is a big concern.
Thank you for sharing your findings for a successful treatment.

Did this 2x when my cocker spaniel was about 9 mo old. I told the vet I was going to try this and he said okay, that if it didn't work we'd do surgery. She is now 2 yrs 9 mo and never had to do it again nor did we need surgery. She has beautiful big eyes; so glad I tried this method of repair.

Thank you so much for this information. I was just sitting on the sofa with my dog watching TV and when she looked up at me I seen this tinny red mass on the corner of her eye. I was so worried because right now I'm dealing with a very sick cat and the vet bills are starting to add up and to think of another one for my dog just worried me. I read your article and tried it right away and the tinny red mass is gone. I thank you so much. I'm going to keep an eye on her and once we get the cat tended to I will be taking my dog into the vet to have her checked. Thank you again.

I can't thank you enough for sharing this experience! I woke up and my sweet Zeppelin had "a little pink blob" in his eye. I start googling and at first panic thinking I'm going to have to take him to the vet and pay a huge bill. After walking away and stressing & praying, I gave Google another round and thankfully stumbled onto your post. After giving your warm cloth/massage method a try, the pink blob was GONE within minutes. TRUE JOY & gratitude for your post & prayers answered. Thanks for sharing and helping others!

We have 2 Boston Terriers , male and female from the same litter that are just turning 3 and the female has had a few episodes of this and the vet told us surgery too but I discovered that it came after she would roll around and rub her face in the grass a lot and that the histamine reaction was likely causing it to happen so when it occurred right away I gave her benedryl at the dose the vet said and it went away within a few doses . The vet said she had never seen this work before but keep doing it if it works . This time however I was away and my husband did not catch it until it had been red and puffy for a few hours and it has not gone away with the standard 2-3 doses of benedryl so I am going to try the massage in the morning . Thanks for the idea .

To my horror my 5 month old bulldog woke up from a nap with cherry eye. I always thought the only treatment for this was surgery. Thank goodness I came across your article. I soaked his eye with a warm wash cloth and his lid slid right back into place.

I took my 11 month old Maltese Shitzu to the vet yesterday and was told that she would need surgery to correct her "cherry eye" He gave me some ointment and said to book her in as soo as possible (quote was $560AUD for the surgery)...this morning it looks normal! I think I will leave the surgery for now. After reading your story I will monitor to see if it ever happens again. Thanks.

Did not work for 10 month Dane. Two key things, it took me three tries for calm position for 5 -10 min massage. His cherry started Fruday. Emergency vet gave us cortizone neomycin cream. Either the ointment makes it too moist for positioning oe gland is not moving or, crazy Dane keeps moving head to pull it out. It's very difficult to truly see if gland is going back in.

Thank you! This totally worked on my Beagle. In just a few minutes of very very gentle massage on his eye, I lifted the cloth and his cherry eye was totally gone. It took maybe 3 or 4 minutes of calm, gentle, slow massage with a warm, damp cloth.

Hello. I've tried this. It does work, however the gland continues to prolapse. Is that common? Vet said let's wait 2 wks and reeval since it comes and goes. If its present continuously then we need to think about further tx. I'm continuing the massaging and it goes back in but reappears throughout the day. Just worried. We are also using eye drops.

I came home from work and found one of my 3 month old baby shih tzu had a swollen eye. I was so scared. I have two more puppies and I thought they got into a fight and one of them scratched her eye. I waited a few hours for the swelling to go down but it never did. I was so scared. I searched online and everything was tell me to see a vet. Then I came across this page and followed the instructions exactly. Within a few minutes I notice the swelling going down. Then I began to massage it until it went back into her eye. I am so happy. Thank you so much for helping me. Felt so good to know I was helping and comforting my puppy. Thank you

Hi guys I just want to say a big thank you for this blog post. I was bathing our 4 month old shihtzu when I saw this bulbous lump under his eye. I panicked and thought it was something awful so we booked him into the vet for that afternoon. The vet confirmed he had cherry eye and that it was very common in his breed and that they were reluctant to operate because of the complications and that we should just leave it alone and see what happens. He said to us that it could get worse and to keep an eye on it but for the mean time it wasn't bothering him. We came away from the vets with this information fresh in our minds and just looking at my little pup with this lump peeping out of his eye just did not sit well with me. After reading your post I massaged his eye back and fourth and before I knew it it was back in place! Thank you so so much for this guidence. I think we are all guilty of taking professional advice as gospel when clearly you guys were the ones that knew best. : ) xxx

Thanks for the advice! I massaged my dogs head and focused around the affected eye and within 30 minutes his eye was back to normal! I never touched the eyelid so was surprised that massaging around the area worked! Our vet told us that our dog had a 90% chance of needing surgery. So happy to be one of the 10% that don't need it thanks to your massage trick.

Wow! I'm a canine massage therapist and have used massage for so many different things to help dogs recover from dis-ease. When I came home tonight, my heart sank. My 2 year old Newfie had cherry eye. It wasn't there when I left earlier in the evening. I immediately went to the internet to confirm my fears and found your article. Ten minutes later, it was gone. She'll be going to the vet day after next to double check that all is well. Thank you so much!

This really works. We have a Lhasa Apso would woke up this morning with this cherry eye. At first I thought it was something else, but when I saw the pictures I knew it was cherry eye. Just after a few minutes with warm water and massage it started going back in place. We will do it again, since our doggie doesn't sit still until he wants to..Thank you so much for your advice.

Hello, I’m so sorry you have to go through this. I am also going through the samething and my heart is breaking as I read the part about PetSmart as the same exact thing happen to us. We dropped are English bulldog rubble off. I picked up up later. I didn’t realize his eye till I got home. He was on a leash walking. I didn’t notice but till getting out of the car I seen it and lost it. I called the vet sent them pictures and they told me what it was and made a appointment but told me not to worry. It was around the sametime I got a email from PetSmart with a picture of him with the cherry eye. I know for a fact it wasn’t there when I left him. I called to let the manager know but nothing but a sorry about that I’ll talk to them. I will never ever take him there and I will be at every grooming appointment till I can get one I trust. I was told the stress caused it to happen and they clearly do not know what they are doing and forced it all on him and that’s not how it should be done. We also have did the massaging method it seemed to work at first but for the last week it keeps coming back out and the other eye also at times. I don’t want surgery but I think we may have to go down that road. I hope all is well with your fur baby.

Thank you for this tip. I was so worried about my 11 year old chihuahua, when this happened to her seemingly out of nowhere last night, I don't know if it was caused by stress during a thunderstorm we had, though her cherrie eye was mild, it was still scary, I rinsed it with saline gave her a treat and let her lay on my lap undisturbed by our other dogs. She quickly fell asleep and it went away. I'm still worried it will re-emerge so I was looking for information on home remedies just in case. and I'm glad to see other potential options other than surgery.

Hello there,
Thanks for your invaluable article with homeopathic treatment, it's a godsend.

Last night my dog Pebbles, of mixed breed was attacked by another dog that's an absolute nuisance. Pebbles is about 14 months old and non aggressive and afraid of this female terrier!
I didn't notice anything until early this morning, when I realized there was something wrong with Pebbles right eye. A pink area protruded from the outer corner, and having not
seen anything like this before, I was horrified. I didn't know if the eye was damaged, or some sort of worm was burrowing into the corner. Though on examination of the underlying tissue in his other eye, I could determine the pink protrusion was part of the eye structure. I can't go anywhere because of Corona virus and lockdown, so I WhatsApped pictures etc to my vet who said it looked like a prolapsed gland, and to apply eye drops. To keep her informed.
I also WhatsApped another vet who mentioned cherry eye and that surgery might be necessary.
Armed with this info, I perused the net, finding out more about the condition and possible treatments, including your article.
Apparently it's thought to be hereditary, with mainly 'brachycephalic' dogs being affected, as well as some cats. Brachycephalic meaning 'squishy-faced'
Events that the dog finds traumatic it seems, can bring it on. Such as an attack, allergic reaction,nail-clipping etc.
On and off today, I applied drops, alternating warm compresses, and gentle massages, downwards and towards the snout as another website recommended. I'm pleased to say it appears to have gone back into place essentially though I'll continue the treatments a little longer, and monitor it carefully to see what happens.
Thanks again, and to all your commenters, much appreciated.

THIS WORKS!!!
I was worried for my baby Lucy when she walked from going potty outside with a big cherry eye. She gets bad allergies and goes straight to scratching her eyes. The cherry eye mildly happened one time a while ago and when I came home from work it was gone. However this time it wasn’t going down AT ALL! I was worried I’d have to go to the vet and be told she’d have to get surgery!! Thanks to you and this article I tried it and boom! FIXED! My girl is rolling around happy and this dog mama is even more relieved! Cannot thank you enough for this diy cherry eye helper! Also she turns 3 years old tomorrow and I didn’t want my Lucy to have to go to the vet on her birthday?? so thank you again!!!!!!

I took my cane Corso twice on both eyes to get fixed I payed 700 per eye for it to come back again she is 11 months old and I’m pissed iff because this should of been disclosed by the Breeder and if surgery is done it should not come back my God how many times must a person be paying untill the dog gets how old or when will it stop coming back I believe if your paying a vet surgeon for a surgery it shouldn’t come back there has to be a fix that’s permanent right please let me know if you know if one I can’t keep paying almost a thousand dollers every couple of month when it comes back

Took my 9 week old french bulldog pup to the vets where they confirmed she had cherry eye, she gave me a course of antibiotic eye drops and another lubricating eye drop and told me she would have to get surgery at 6 months. This was 4 days ago and I have follow up appointment in 3 days (1 week after the initial appointment) yesterday I went onto Google and found this page, I followed the instructions on the massage technique and her eye no longer has the cherry eye issue.

I can confirm this works!

omg happened to my frenchie, probably 3 times now. The first time it happened, like you I was convinced it wa something terrible. But it seems to only happen when his eye gets irritated, like from the wind.

I just put some artificial tear eye drops in and massaged his eye and the eyelid returned to normal. I'm not sure if this is true cherry eye, or just signs of a predisposition to it :( or just normal doggie eyelid problems but I'm glad I read this post, makes me less nervous now that I see it happens to others and is fixed the same way.

Ah also wanted to add that like LuLu, this happens pretty rarely for my dog, maybe once a year? so it is a great immediate fix and I hope the rarity and mildness of it for our furbabies means it doesn't get worse!

Well, we all freaked when my human sister, brother and mother saw my eye bulging with cherry eye. I'm six years old and have never experienced this issue before so of course my humans did a search and found your site. Thank the puppy-gods since my human dad, although he'd never go through with it, put a $500 limit on my medical care when he purchased me for my human mom. (He's Irish, so $500 is better than being shot for limping or whatever...) ANYWAY, my human mom washed her hands twice, soaked a clean wash cloth in hot water and massaged my cherry eye right back into place! Brilliant!

By the way, it only took two minutes...maybe the other posts where it took longer have hyper pups since I'm totally chill unless someone's in the kitchen, then I have to put on my game face. A dogs gotta' snack!

I been using eye drops and rubbing them back in on my weenie dog rowdy for years, my daughter's weenie dog got them in both eyes and she took her to the vet and they removed them. She told them that i get rowdy's to go back in and they told her thats not possible, they have never heard of them going back in without surgery. Now i have a puppy from the two and she has them too. I feel they have allergies cause they will pop up at the same time, I give them benadryl ans eye drops and rub them back in. Rowdy is an easy fix being old and loving any attention he can get, but Lilly is a total spaz no it takes a lot of work to fix hers sometimes it can take a week of drops and eye rubs to fix it.

My Addie got her first eye when my mom was hospitalized and I think with all the stress in the our lab mix attacked and killed our dachshund then I noticed the second eye a few weeks ago I tried this but I think because it has been so long gone it is not working so looks like my Addie is looking at surgery Alt frowning
But I'm not going to give up I will try a couple more times she is only 7 months old rottie

I love the part:
"The last thing I wanted was for Wendy to walk in, freak out, and then have her third eyelid pop out" Lol.

I had never heard of this before. You've given great advice as to how to remedy this without an immediate trip to the vet. I'm a big proponent of homeopathic solutions.
We once employed one (suggested by our vet) on our previous Golden Retriever who had eaten a razor blade. Needless to say I was in hysterics, the vet was very calm. Apparently, I had come to learn later, retrievers are known for their fascination with foreign objects. Thank goodness our current dog only seems to be interested in soap and nothing else!

Poor Lulu girl. So happy to hear that you were able to treat her without an additional traumatic trip to the vet.

Our 7 month old bullie started showing a cherry eye and I was able massage it back. Also she was terrified of nail trims as well. Boiled chicken works wonders. She now almost falls asleep in my lap as she associates chicken with nail trim.

Can you explain your nail trimming routine to me please? I have a seven yr old rescue dog,Bubba, amd she still is terrified of it! How do you feed her the chicken? During the cutting or rt before/after? As a treat w your hand or in a bowl?

It's a snow storm tonight in Jersey. After my female dog izzy comes up from some down time she has cherry eye for the second time. The snow storm in full force I tried this remedie and it worked great. She of course is the hyper one of the two but after getting her to calm down and take to what was going on she was fine after about 10 min of the warm cloth. Thanks for posting this it saved me money and my girl is as good as new

I have never heard of Cherry eye in a dog. I have a peke a poo and her eye has been like this for about three months because I didn't know what it was. I barely have money to keep my house going in that I've been unemployed since September, so taking her to th vet is not an option. Hopefully I can continue to try the massage method and it will help. Thanks for the information, I just wish I would have known sooner. Let me know if you know of any agency that might help with the vet.

Try giving benadryl and using eye drops, use eye drops and rub eyes daily it helps. When they are out very long they start getting really red, swollen and dry.

I had my Shichon puppy's corrected and 6 weeks later it appeared again. I as well rather not put her through another operation. It will come and go. I have been using an ointment that helps bring down the inflammation but I would like to find what is causing it. I now think that all along there is a stressful experience that is causing this and your mention of the stress related incident of nail clipping and Lulu coming out with the cherry eye, sort of affirms the sequence of events for mine. It seems that after she gets groomed she has a flare up. She gets groomed every 6 weeks and this is why we keep seeing it reappear. I'm not sure if water or chemicals are getting in her eye and affecting her. For now I'm going to try massaging it as you did and see if it helps.

My dog randomly developed the exact same pink eye mass in the corner of her eye just thirty minutes ago. I was freaking out and panicking as soon as I saw that surgery is what is needed to correct it. I found this page and went to go get a warm wet cloth and when I came back, the pink mass was gone! My Chi got cherry eye pretty often as a pup, then went thru about a year without it. Now have a new pup who wants to play with him and in the past couple of months has had cherry eye 3-4 times.

I use your method and it works every time. Tonight was a little more difficult, so I came back to read your directions and discovered that I had forgotten about the warm compress. Most times I didn't need it, tonight I did.

Cherry eye all gone and will remember warm compress in the future.

Thank you so much.

I'm so relieved! My 6 month old Lhasa had corrective surgery for her cherry eye before we adopted her at 4 months of age. Last night she was playing very hard with her toys and I tried to settle her down by holding her before bedtime. Needless to say, this was the wrong thing to do. Out popped her cherry eye. I put her in her kennel and said "Good Night" and began my google search. Luckily I found you! I went and retrieved my now sleeping puppy (with a warm wash cloth in hand) and began the process of rubbing her belly and using the warm wash cloth on her eye. Two or three passes with the warm wash cloth and the cherry eye was gone! Let me say that she is used to the position of belly rubs and warm washcloths as I've been wiping her eyes every day. It's been part of my routine to prepare her for grooming and to keep her eye area clean. The cherry eye that she had surgery runs more than her other eye. We had our first grooming last week and it went wonderful! Any questions about how we prepared a very unruly pup for grooming, please contact me. I'd love to help. Again, thank you for the home remedy for the cherry eye. It was almost like witnessing an inverted eye contact that one corrects before putting it in your own eye! One little pop and that was it! Sooooo Happy!Alt smile

We actually have a two year old Maltese and were told the same things by our vet - It can only be corrected with surgery. We were actually saving for a few months for her procedure and she ended up being sprayed by a skunk! Throughout the intensive cleaning process involved after something such as this, we discovered (once she was dry) that the cherry eye was gone! She did get sprayed in the face so we were carefully massaging in that area and in the same manner whilst cleaning. It has yet to come back and the vet was even shocked! She of course acts no different but we saved a lot of money and know that she is happy and healthy! Thank you for providing this to the masses!

Is it possible for someone to share a video with me how how exactly this is done? I have just adopted a Cane Corso who was surrendered by a breeder who did not want a pup with this issue. Mr. President is just 8 months old and needs me to help him with his cherry eye. If someone knows of a video showing how to properly do this procedure, please share it with me.

OMG this happened to my 4 month old Shih Tzu today. I left her to pick up my daughter from school, came home and saw this pink blob in the corner of here eye. I was really freaked out. I took her to Banfield hospital at Petsmart - so not have pet insurance. I was charged $48.95 for the visit. The vet took a q-tip and pushed the third eye lid back in. It took a few tries before it set back into place. I was told that they need to check the eye to see if its scratched $40, and medication will be about $40 something and no i didn't do this bc I didn't have the money. Pepper is fine for now and I hope there's no underlying problem. I will continue to monitor it and try this massage. Thank you so much for posting this. I also will not freak out - or at least try not to. I will definitely try this and report back. Thank you.

Alex
10/17/2014

Hi Haydee. We know how hard it is not to freak out, even after we tell ourselves not to freak out. Hopefully you won't have any other issues, and if you do hopefully this will work for you.

Since you mentioned insurance, you might want to check out a post we did on the pet insurance company we've used for the last few years. http://oldtownhome.com/2012/1/26/Mels-Health-Scare---Why-We-Choose-to-Have-Pet-Insurance/

Absolutely worth it in our opinion.

Teri
5/19/2016 at 3:33 AM

PLEASE DO NOT use a Qtip yourself to push the 3rd eyelid back into place. Their cotton swabs are very tightly wound and the cotton will not come off into the eye. The Qtips we buy at the store can shed cotton fibers and end up trapped in between the eyelid and your dog's eye and scratch it, possibly causing infection or could damage it so bad that your pup could lose it's eye. Not to mention the possibility of an accidental injury if the dog were to move suddenly or if your hand were to slip.

Sorry, I HAD TO comment this because there ARE people that would possibly attempt doing something that you described your vet doing. You may want to reconsider some of the information that you put out there in the future, knowing that it could possibly bring harm to an innocent puppy dog ?? Not everybody has common sense, unfortunately. Sadly, I've seen the aftermath of plenty of those who fall in that category.

I'm not trying to come across rude, I would just die if any animal were hurt because of the stupidity of a single human being...and it could happen... Have a good night everybody.

And yes, this is all great info for cherry eye. I had a Blue Heeler, Katie, that used to shake her toys so hard that it popped her tear duct out...hence the cherry eye. It WAS DEFINITELY trauma induced. Heelers are not a cherry eye common breed. Seriously, I had vaulted ceilings (like at least 22 ft high) with pot shelves that I could put decorations up on about 2/3 the way up the wall, and I would find her toys up on those shelves from her flinging them so hard when she played with them. Or I would come home to find marks on my ceiling where the toys had hit it. I had to end up taking her toys away from her before she shook both of her eyes out of her head lol. But really, not lol! Obviously her cherry eye surgery did not hold. Her tear duct popped back out shortly after she healed up. As long as your dog's eyes produce tears still, and they are not drying out, they are ok. That is what my vet told me. But I did still put ointments in when her eyes would look pretty irritated...ie:springtime or during the windy /dusty weather.

Just wanted to say thanks. My little wiener dog gets cherry eye every now and again and it usually just goes away so we never worried, but this last time it had been here for nearly a week do I started looking around and I found your blog. Killian Potter
10/26/2014 at 10:00 PM

I do think that this can be a trauma induced condition. I took my bulldogs to the vet to have a skin infection looked at. After minutes of holding Gunner still and the vet getting a sample, I noticed the "cherry eye" by the time we left the vet it was gone.tonight i noticed that our female now has the red bump so I am going to try the massage tecnique

My shar pei just got cherry eye,the vet charged me 45 for eyedropsn said at least 200 for a op so I went home n looked on this site and within ten minutes of doing this it was gone and has back to normal I honestly wouldn't of believed it unless I saw but it actually works and I'm over the moon with it!
So thank you he would have had to have surgery if it wasn't for the this site

11/17/2014 at 5:57 PM

wow its amazing would it work on a big cherry eye the red mass is big and just want to know if it still works

Ren
11/30/2014 at 7:46 PM

This definitely WORKS!!! Thank you!!!
The red bulge was pretty small but I notices it right away because my Pom's eye became supper red and he is creme color so his eyelids and facial skin lining (nose, lips, eyelids) are normally pink so the red bulge was very visible. It stayed like that over night. I thought it was some irritation and it will go away, but then the next day I saw the bugle was a bit bigger so I googled what is this issue. I just did the massage on his eye and the warm compress and I tried pushing the bulge inside towards to corner between the eye and the nose. I did this for maybe 10-15 min and it was gone, it had all gone inside and the eye had the white part showing as regular. I will be monitoring of course to see if it happens again. I think it could happen from irritation, like dirt/liquid getting in the eye (like pink eye) and from stress when they are freaked out causing them to bark a lot.

Again, thank you for sharing this.

I have an English Bulldog and his cherry eye has gone away and come back multiple times. Once it was there for more than an hour I tried to massage it back for 3 minutes. It didn't seem to help (though I don't know exactly how much pressure to put on while massaging). Luther's cherry eye seems to be a little more inflamed then some of the other pictures. My vet told me to either just leave it there and he would live a perfectly normal life with it or to get it surgically removed. Should I put more pressure and try to massage for longer? With how big it was, I was afraid to do any sort of permanent damage by applying to much pressure. HELP

I am having an issue with our new pup, as well. I had never seen this before, and when it happenned, I thought he had been playing too rough with our older dogs, or had scrated his eye with his nail, or something. I wasnt sure and I was So Upset until my son found articles and videos on home remedies for cherry eye. I know it needs to be dealt with pretty quickly, but Im so scared to hurt him!! When you massage his eye, which direction should you be massaging it, and how much pressure should you be putting on the cherry eye?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

This is from her post:
" I very gently moved my thumb over her eyelid, putting almost no pressure on her eye, from the center of her closed eye towards the corner of her eye near her nose. I repeated this several times until I felt the third eyelid almost suck back into the right place."

Thank you so much for your article. I have Bagel (part beagle, part bassett) that I rescued 3 years ago. A week after we got her, she developed a cherry eye in her right eye. It cost us $1,000 to fix it, including our poor girl having to wear the cone of shame for several weeks. This morning, we woke up and Chloe had a cherry eye in the other eye. I immediately went online and read your article, followed the steps, and in less than a minute, the cherry eye was gone. We both thank you SO much!

We rescued a boxer who, unfortunately, had a bad case of cherry eye for what they suspected had been months before the rescue group found him. The damage was too bad to leave the third eyelid on that eye, so they had to remove it. This morning he had a big pink blob on the other eye but I remembered finding this page when I was looking up cherry eye after his surgery to see what caused it. Anyway, I just followed your directions (easier said than done when trying to calm a boxer, especially when his Chihuahua companion keeps barking) and it worked perfectly! I am very appreciative of your instructions as my boxer does not like going to the vet.

This didn't work for me. The first time I thought it worked, but the cherry eye came back in about an hour. The second time, no results at all. Is it okay to put 'people' eye drops in her eye and try again? Also, I should mention that Josie's cherry eye comes out every 1-2 months, then goes away on its own within a few days. My Vet is aware of the situation, so I know the dangers if it remains too long. Josie's had the surgery to repair this condition on both eyes already. The eye that the cherry eye has had the recurrence was operated on through the dog sanctuary where we adopted her about a year ago. The other eye was also operated on through the same circumstances, but we had already made the adoption arrangements, and paid for the second surgery ourselves prior to taking her home. I found her through online sources for adopting rescue dogs and the sanctuary and Vet is over 2 hours away, so I'm not sure if it's worth attempting to get the Vet to warranty the failed procedure. Our Vet said he warranties this procedure for a lifetime. Josie is the best dog ever and she's brought such joy into our lives that we will do whatever is best for her. I've become disabled and can no longer work, so avoiding paying for another surgery would be great. Thanks for any help!

Your article is awesome. Thank you. I have a 2 year old Chihuahua who developed a Cherry Eye 10/3/14. I took her to the vet and they advised surgery was recommended. I wanted to think about it as Pinkie is my baby & very sensitive. She would not handle a surgery nor an overnight stay well. I kept putting it off & then 4/2/15 in the evening, it miraculously disappeared. I "googled" to see if there was anything about them disappearing and came across your article. I will keep it handy in case it comes back. Keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this article! My yorkie came in and I noticed this bulge on her eye. Immediately went to Google and figured out it was cherry eye and your article was the second one I read. It's only been there for at most a few hours as she didn't have it this morning, but I got a washcloth and ran it under warm water and placed over her eye. I didn't even have to get to the massaging part, as when I lifted it after about a minute, the gland had already went back into place. You just saved me a trip to the vet!

I just wanted to take the time to personaly thank you for this post!

I had a scary moment when I looked at by Boston terrier after a play session with his buddy to notice his eye was huge and his tear duct was bluging from his eye.

I immediately went online, I knew somebody, somewhere would know what this is and how to fix it. You were my first post to read and it worked like a charm, within 2 minutes his eye was back to normal and he was licking my face again! So thank you for helping me calm down and helping my dog!

Today, Jun 5, 2015, My english bulldog, Easton, developed cherry eye. I have never had an animal have this condition, however, before I purchased Easton I read up on the english bulldog breed. The english bulldog breed is likely to get "cherry eye." Anyway, today was Easton's bath day. He was fine. That is, no cherry eye. I left the house for an hour and came home to find Easton with full blown cherry eye! I was freaking out, to say the least. I immediately called his Vet, however, they would not be able to see him until Monday June 8, 2015 at 3:00! This simply would not do, so I went to my computer to find some ways to possible fix it myself, and if not Easton and I would be taking a trip to the emergency vet.
Then, I stumbled upon this page. Thank god I did because I did the warm wash cloth technique on Easton, and it worked!!!!!! It worked within minutes! Now, I am prepared if it happens again!!!
THANK YOU

I would just like to say thank you for posting this. I have 4 pure breed cockers and 4 weeks ago I just paid $825.00 for my eldest(7yrs old) to have eye surgery to fix her cherry eye. The vet told us it was the only solution. We were extremely upset to find out that even after surgery this could reoccur. The stress on the dog having to be left at the vet broke my heart (she has anxiety). 2 days ago one of my other cockers (3yrs old) suddenly had cherry eye. I knew what it was right away this time. I decided to do some homework on line and came across this. I was hoping to find a way to spare my baby the stress of surgery (not to mention the expense of $1650.00 in just over a month between the two dogs). I decided we would be no worse for ware to give it a shot especially since surgery is possibly only a temporary fix any way. After about 3-4 min this method worked and it's a much less aggressive temporary fix too. My little girl loved the attention and the massage. Thank you so much for posting this it was very helpful.

I do not understand how so many report 8-900 bucks for this fix? My pup is a basset, took her in, vet prescribed ointment, that is IF it is not genetic it will shrink then be able to pop back in... she is 17 weeks today, IF this fix doesn't work, she'll have the simple tacking procedure done while she is being fixed... so spay, anesthesia, all in is $387 estimate max $400 with spay, bloodwork.. so of the bill, $63 is the cherry eye. He said cherry eye is more of an issue to the parent than the dog and if it isn't bothering him/her it is the humans that note the issue. Our breeder had said $75 to suture it back and it can be hereditary OR not yet unfixable if not noticed soon. So, if you see it, don't delay, it could be the difference between massaging it back into place with dog eyedrop lubricant from a place like amazon ... or having to go through a local anesthesia then surgery.

Stand alone fix is $115 had we not been told to just do it at 6 months when she gets spayed.

MAKE SURE you don't have your pet put under more than once because it isn't good for them to be put to sleep to fix the eye then spay/neuter so if close, do them together please.

My 10 yr old Cavalier King Charles/Cocker mix looked at me with cherry eye after her bath last night. This is my third cocker, so i knew right away...stress for the baby and $800 for the vet. My previous cocker had surgery on both eyes for this. I wanted to know "why" and found this site. I gingerly followed the directions with the warm cloth, etc. And was thrilled beyond words to see success. I was so grateful and excited that i typed all this in the wrong place and it went away. Figured i should do it today, now that I've calmed down. Thank you so much from Roxy and I both!! Will pass this on to all my fellow dog lovers!!

This has nothing whatsoever to do with homeopathy. More, simple physics. If you massage a swollen object, that object may decrease in size and therefore could be reduced (replaced under the 3rd eyelid in this case).

Of course, many dogs won't tolerate a swollen cherry eye being rubbed so sometimes vets prescribe steroid eye drops. If all else fails, the gland can simply be excised ( the risk of KCS is overstated)

Disclaimer - I hate homeopathy - It's b#llsh#t of the highest order

Hi! I was just trimming my 3 1/2 month puppy... And as I have a habit of checking everything ... Kind of opening her eyelids to check for anything I ended up pushing up this "cherry"! Never was it exposed though , I hate surgeries as the only answer and I'm glad i came across your site. But since it was out but she sure has one should I try the massage and maybe it won't be visible at all ???

This works!! After reading your story I tried this on my 11 week old pug. He did not like me anywhere near his eye so I put him in the bath, which he loves, and while I had him in there I messaged his eye, within minutes it was gone. We are so thankful for your story, it saved us an 1100.00 vet bill. This was the quote we received from our local vet just days ago. I'm so glad I decided to research this and came across your story, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I can verify that this method does indeed work to put the third eyelid's gland back in place. Not always, not all dogs, but it is most definitely worth a try. I had a puppy bulldog, Mack, in 2009 who had this issue in both eyes, and we massaged them back in on several occasions. He did eventually need corrective surgery to fix the issue. And about a month ago my 6 month old bulldog, Willow, had the same issue in her left eye. Unfortunately her gland was either too big, or protruding too far, and no matter what I tried it wouldn't recede. She had surgery and is doing great- just took her cone off yesterday!
By the way that reminds me, if you are reading this and you have a very young bulldog puppy- GET PET INSURANCE!!
With Bulldogs it's almost guaranteed to come in handy sooner or later- mine is already paying for itself and its only been a few months!
Good luck!

I can't believe this worked but it did!!! I am so happy I found this. My 7 month old boxer puppy developed this and I took him straight to the vet. She said to give it a few days with a lubricating eye drop and then if it didn't reduce he would need surgery. I was freaking out!!!! I tried this massage and within a minute or so it reduced and is totally normal. I hope it stays in place. ??

My 4 month old English bulldog has cherry eye in both eyes. I keep massaging them and putting eye-polysporin drops to keep the area free from infection. I try to massage the glands back into place but no luck. They'll pop back up. I have an appointment for 3rd December for a surgery. They're going to charge me $1400

You are amazing! My dog already has chronic ear infections which I switched him to the more expensive blue buffalo without grain to see if it helps. When I read surgery was needed for this too I wanted to cry. It worked within a few minutes. Thank you,

I was just outside playing the dogs when I noticed something wrong with our Cane Corso's eye. Upon closer look, which wasn't easy cause he was in total play mode, it looked just like Cherry Eye to me. All I knew about Cherry Eye was that it's common for the breed and "requires" surgery to fix. A quick search brought up this site so off I went to fix his eye. By the time I finished washing my hands and double checked his eye it was all fixed. I then read another site that said you can fix Cherry Eye by simply getting your dog to lay on it's back and relax for a few minutes. Well, as soon as we came inside he laid down and completely relaxed so he must have fixed his own eye, LOL! I will definitely keep this site in mind though for any future incidences.

Oh my gosh, Lulu is adorable! My Oripei Bulldog, Laila, came up with a cherry eye this evening and I was devastated. Not knowing what it was, I rushed her to the best animal hospital around for an emergency visit. After checking the eye, they told me that she would need surgery and booked us an appointment with their ophthalmologist for two days from now. I found your post and thought it was worth a try. It took me a little while (mainly because Laila was so squirmy!!) but I finally got it back in! I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!! Truly, I am SO thankful to have come across your post and 1) be able to help my little girl 2) not have to put her through surgery 3) not have the cost of surgery. THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO VERY MUCH!! We noticed the first signs of cherry eye a few minutes ago on our Old English Bulldog. Thank you for this post. We will try this harmless method this evening and post an update on how it went. Non-surgical methods that are harmless are always worth a try before dangerous (and costly) surgery.

Thank you so much for the advice!! My long haired chihuahua, Jagger, got a cherry eye this week; although I had no idea what it was and had to Google it. His looked just like LuLu's. I'm extremely glad I saw and read your article. Thanks so much!!!

Just wanted to say wowwwwww!!!!! And a massive thank you.
I came down to my 11 week old pup

Took to vet who said about massage,
not so much about how and no mention
of warm cloth.
I luckily found your forum this

I can't tell you how amazed I am.
And of course so very grateful as is

Still red, but hopefully will settle
by morning.
Truly brilliant and so kind of you to

Just wanted to confirm that I have seen two seven month old pups get in a scrap and by the time I arrived in the yard to separate them they appeared unhurt but.....one pup had double cherry eyes! It all happened from severe stress and no doubt an increase in intraorbital pressure [in the sinuses behind the eye] during the tussle. Just proof positive that this condition can pop out instantly during a stressful struggle.

And an important thing to be aware of: in the third world countries the American and native clinics have used our common 'triple antibiotic ointment' like Neosporin for decades to treat human eye infections and irritations. It is perfect to use directly in the eye (pull out the lower lid and put a little in the pouch below) and use that to massage the eye. Use it three times a day to keep the eyes lubricated.

THANK YOU! It worked first try. Our pup is part cocker and evidently this is usual in cockers. She had it once before a couple of weeks ago but it corrected itself within an hour. When it happened again, I checked the web and they said it would require a change of diet but was not an infection. Then on day 2 I checked again to see if there was something besides diet to do and saw your recommendation. One warm cloth and a few rubs later and its back in place. SO grateful!

read through every ones success stories and I'm still asking for help. How long did it take to correct it's self and how bad was the eye at the time when you did this. Was the eye just a small bubble red spot near the tear duct or was it a big red and puffy? Our cocker woke up with it today and the vet said it is cherry eye. How long do you work the eye lid befor you see results.

Thank you SO much for sharing your story!!! I knew what this was called but I never had to deal with it myself until my boxer and cattle dog played too rough. I caught it early (as you mentioned) and I think that makes a huge difference so you can avoid dryness and infection. I did exactly what you said, it took a minute for my cattle dog to relax but after she did I checked her eye (after eye massage was done) and it was improved but not gone so I gently pressed over her eye while massaging in the same direction and then looked, good as new!!! I can't thank you enough!! You saved me a vet bill too and saved mt dog stress and made me realize to try holistic first!

OH. MY. GOSH. I was laying down in bed tonight and my heeler pup hopped up with me and I see this big angry bulge in his eye. He always has kind of red eyes so I thought maybe it had always been there and I missed it, but surely not. I would have noticed this. I thought that maybe one of the cats had got him, but found no scratches or blood. I instantly googled dogs with red, swollen eyes and found the name "cherry eye". I started reading and I was freaking out that my dog may have to surgery to fix this thing. Then I found your page. Home rememdy for cherry eye. Of course I was going to try it! I immediately grabbed a wash cloth and went to work on the tummy rub and followed your instructions and voila! Cherry eye is gone. I am so happy, thank you so much!!

Hi Koraine,

It did not work for me the first attempt either. In fact, it just made it more red and swollen. What I did on the second attempt (the next morning) was add more pressure and push directly on the cherry for about 10 mins until I heard a "pop"... now he's good as new!

Wow this is very helpful info! My 6 year old rabbit has a cherry eye for almost a year now. We took him to a vet however the vet prescribed Isathal eye gel which was to be used 3 times daily for 1 week. Sadly this gel didn't work at all and my rabbit still has the cherry eye. thank you for your insight on cherry eye. my cocker spaniel developed cherry eye at 4mo old back in 1991, however the vet had no idea what was going on, so I spent hundreds of $ on tests to no avail. I happened to take Bo (my cocker love)to get vaccination updates at a different clinic when the Dr. on duty recognized it immediately as cherry eye, and we proceeded in eye surgery(s). Unfortunately, I believe I waited too long, as he was 9 mo old by that time, and he had eye infection/weeping problems for the rest of his life. Had the dr.s that initially cared for him knew of the condition, I believe the outcome could have been more tolerable for my boy. Now, 15 yrs later with my new baby weiner dog Whinney, at 14 wks old, I recognized the condition immediately, and have been using warm compresses until our appt with her dr. today. I so want to avoid surgery so lets hope I caught it in time to avoid the discomfort, worry and expense. will keep you posted. thank you!

This absolutely works!!!
I noticed the cherry eye on my 5 year old havanese bichon yesterday. I tried the warm cloth thing and the massage and nothing changed. I tried again this morning and it worked! Today I put more pressure on the eye while massaging and also did it for 10 minutes. I felt a "pop" and poof! Gone!
My Monkey didn't even feel a thing. He thought I was just rubbing him for his pleasure lol. (He makes these sighing noises when belly rubbed and was making the noises at the time) hopefully this fix is permanent!
I think this remedy has to be done immediately otherwise it may not work. But i just saved hundreds on a vet. Thank you!!!

Hi, I noticed that you said while massaging the eye that we'll feel the third eyelid get sucked back into place. I didn't feel anything while doing that. I might be massaging my dogs eye wrong. did you do it in a circular motion or just back in forth?

thanks so much for your help!

So, so thankful for this article!! When I spotted a little cherry eye on my pup I absolutely panicked because I've only heard about how expensive surgery for it is. Tried this and in worked!! Only took a minute or two! I'm going to repeat for a few hours just for good measure. Luckily she has a yearly appointment in the next few days so I can bring up the incident to my vet. We've had her for 5 years and this is the first that this has happened. I'm hoping it's the last!

Thank you! Took my new lab/terrier pup to emergency vet unaware this was not an emergency just scary looking. Vet tried to put back in but within minutes it popped back out. Told me to contact my regular vet to discuss surgery if it didn't go away by itself soon. Googled cherry eye and found your page so gave it a try. Within a minute it was gone and has remained gone. Have passed on your web site already to someone else dealing with cherry eye. Applause to you!!!!!

I was giving my 4 dogs their bedtime snacks this evening when I IMMEDIATELY noticed Snickerdoodle's eye. My first thought was TUMOR but since her eyes were fine this morning I thought of INJURY. I immediately searched the web. I had never heard of cherry eye. Snickerdoodle is, btw, a 7 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I got a warm washcloth and held it on her eye for maybe 20 seconds and peeked....IT WAS GONE. I am sure it will return in the future as the membrane has been weakened, but what a relief to know that it can be treated at home. Thank you SO MUCH!!(I also took before and after pics to show my vet upon our next visit)

This happened to my 7 yr old rescue chiweenie today. One minute fine the next minute her eye was sunken, the whites were red and the "cherry eye" protruding ! I got up and grabbed my phone and was putting in the vets number when I looked again and her eye was normal. A friend was having one of her dogs eye removed today and I thought"this is what hallucinating is like" !!! Then I checked the web and found Cherry eye but nothing on it disappearing tiil I found your site. I will feel a lot more confident if it happens again. THANK YOU

My 14 year Dachound would get cherry eye during pollen season n it would go away by itself within 24 hours...7 years ago I decided to give him an allergy pill well big mistake the cherry eye never went away. The vet said surgery. I passed n lived to look past it. I had Kelly in boarding at his vet while I went out of town. He got an eye infection in his good eye n the vet did nothing. I gave him my meds I use for my eye infections but smaller doseage. I just got home his eye infection tis gone n his cherry eye tis gone... If antibiotics with steroids cured him why did not they do this 7 years ago?

I didn't know what was going on with my dog's eye, I went online and somehow I found your page. I read it and did it on her eye exactly the way you explained, and it worked! I just wanted to say Thank you!! and to let you know how much I appreciate your help, I was so worried. My dog is a mix chihuahua 12 years old, poor thing, she didn't need the stress of being sick. Her eye was looking awful and after the massage and warm water her eye is just like nothing happened! Thanks!!

I'm so glad I came across your blog post! My puppy got cherry eye yesterday and we followed your tips on just taking a wet wash cloth and massaging the eye, and it's already gone! <3. I noticed this morning though that she had a bit of pus on the inner corner of her eye? It's already gone but we'll be taking her to the vet this Saturday to get her checked up.

Thank you so much! I've had a rescue pug Boston terrier mix for almost 3 months now and this happened yesterday! I am a new fur baby mom and didn't know what to do! Thanks to Lulu looking like my dog I clicked on the picture and read your story and tried the technique now it didn't go away right away but after my Pepe went to sleep and woke up this morning after the massage it is no longer bulging out anymore! I don't have 800 to fix it so this is a life saver! Thank you so much for sharing your story!

I can't believe this actually worked!! Already spent $1000 at the vet last week for a leg injury and now today my pup woke up with cherry eye. After an itital panic attack I decided to look up home remedies and found yours. It worked like a charm!! Still going to take my guy in tomorrow to get checked out but I feel SO much better not seeing that gland bulging out. THANK YOU!

I have a Beagle mix who is older and gets dry eyes when roaming outside. The home remedy in this article works well.

As a preventative measure I use Optixcare Eye Lube Plus each evening and when the cherry eye occurs I put a drop in before the wet compress and it works every time.

This happened to our 11 week old pug puppy after he had a mad play session and we thought he had got something in his eye. After 2 days I looked it up on the net and found out it was cherry eye and that it could only be sorted by surgery. I checked on the net and found this page. We waited until he went to sleep and then tried this. It took about 5 minutes and it was gone. When he got up this morning it was still gone and his eye looks perfect again. Thank you for explaining so carefully I am so glad we found your page.

Hello Alex,

You are the life saver. The chaos started when I was taking my stand up meeting over the call at evening 8:00 PM. I have 2 Labradors (Gabbar and Laila). I just looked at him after the call and saw the red blob coming out of his eyes. Then my wife saw it, and it started with whether it is a injury during their fight. I called my vetnarian and he was out of town. Then I took Google's help, reached to your blog. I did just 2 mins of massage with warm water and pushed the blob back to the place. It was such a relief for both of us to see our baby back to normal. Thanks a ton!!! I just took the breath of relief 10 mins back and thought of giving you a token of appreciation for this blog.

Hi, my Havanese just appeared Wednesday morning with one of these, after a trip to th groomers on Tuesday. I took her to Banfield today and they only offered surgery as a solution. I found your site and I’ve tied this on her 3 times tonight, to no avail. I have been a wreck all day about this. Do you think 2 days makes it too late to work? I wish there was Simon local who has mastered this technique to try it on her. I’m in Atlanta. Any suggestions?

Came home to our 9 week old puppy with cherry eye. Used a warm cloth just lightly touched the protruding part through the washcloth and it slid back in her eye. She’s been running and playing with her dog brother for the last hour and it hasn’t come back! Saved us hundreds of dollars in an emergency vet visit!

Wow. Thank you! This works. I have a 14 week old frenchie called Hugo. When he came in from playing with his older dog brothers, an Akita and a boxer x mastiffs ridgeback and a few other bits, I was terrified. Our Akita is costing ridiculous money every month due to medications and vet bills for allergies as well as 2x crutiate ligament failures on his hind legs. When my frenchie came in displaying cherry eye, I immediately panicked. What had they done to him? They are always very gentle but sometimes he needs telling off. I searched the net for ideas and was bombarded with suggestions of surgery and medications. I finally came across this and fixed it in seconds, thank you so much!!!

This worked for our 11 week old Frenchie.
I think she scratched her eye outside (it was red first) then a few a few hours later the cherry eye protrusion popped out
My husband distracted her with a bone, and with firm pressure on that inside corner of the eye- it was FIXED GONE in 30 seconds!
Thank you

We just adopted our little 2 yr old chiweinie, Loki, 2 weeks ago.The day before we got him, he had surgery for Cherry eye. He was doing great until he started running & playing with his adopted brother, Thor, 5 yr old chiweinie, whom we got the same day. Lo and behold, out popped the gland again! I cannot afford the ridiculous fee these vets want to charge me so I am definitely going to try this. Question is, its been about 5 days since it popped out again, so is that too long of a time for this to possibly work? Thanks for sharing this article guys and good luck with many puppy blessings to you and Lulu!!

So glad to have stumbled upon this homeopathic solution! I have a 4 year old rescue chihuahua cross that rubs his face in his toys as he plays - after a particularly vigorous session with a rope this evening he came bounding up to me with cherry eye.
A warm wash cloth and a good face massage later the cherry eye is gone!
Vet bills are extortionate in my area (I live rurally where vets can charge whatever they want, and do!) so this just saved me well over $1000 - not that I would mind paying it for his health and happiness, but if I can fix something without invasive surgery all the better!!

Thank you sooo much! My puggle's eye looked odd yesterday morning. I wasn't sure if it was cherry eye, so I googled it and came across this post. She was hard to settle down and relax the first time I tried the technique, so I waited until bedtime when she gets so tired I can try anything. As she was snoring, I put the warm wash cloth onto her eye for only a minute or 2 since she really wasn't liking it. Then took the cloth off and very gently massaged as directed in your post. I didn't think it would work since I could feel the bump as I massaged, and it took longer than a few minutes. This morning she is all better! No redness, just back to normal.Alt smile

Im going to try this tomorrow. My dog had her cherry eye removed last year at the vet. They quoted me 400.00 and I arrived to a 950.00 bill. They told me she had all these problems and you know vets don't listen. She has a thyroid problem and that gives false positives for other issues. She has had white crap in her eyes for years and every vet gives me a different answer. I clean with saline daily and sometimes but some meds I got from mexico but the local vet demands a visit and a large bill. I really hope this works or at least makes it better. It may not since she already was operated on it and not sure what they did. She also rubs her eyes on her blanket and has allergies. Im not sure if she rubs it because it itches or because she cant see cuz the crap in her eyes make it hard to see. Im thinking I did it because I wipe her eyes so much. This time it has only been about a week so Im crossing my fingers on this fix. Even if it lasts a week Im willing to do it every week.

I've had this issue too with my Yorkie Mix. When it first popped out, I ran to the emergency vet only to be told it's cherry eye and immediately gave me a quote for surgery to fix it. $840!!

I went home and fussed around with his eye, and noticed that it pops in and out depending on how open his eyes are and what angle he's looking at.

I wish I knew more about the anatomy of this "3rd eyelid", but it seems like there's a ligament or muscle that holds the 3rd eyelid in. It seems to pop out when there's "trauma" to the eye/ligament. I don't know what other word to use, but let me give you examples of the patterns I've noticed.

When his hair grows out, and the hair pokes in the eye, he gets lots of tears the eye is irritated, the cherry eye pops out. So, now I make sure that his face is constantly shaved short, especially around the eye area. And he can go months without it popping out.

Sometimes, like after baths, when he runs around like a crazy monkey and rolls around and rubs his face in the carpet, it pops out. He probably injured that ligament holding it in.

He had a bout of earwax issues and after flushing his ear with the solution, he shook his head real hard. It popped out. When he scratches his ears and accidentally scratches his eye, it pops out.

So it looks like it's injury to whatever that thing is that holds it in.

What I've found worked was like you, try and massage it back in so it doesn't protrude that much. I usually massage it throughout the day and right before he closes his eyes to sleep. It seems to pop back in when he goes to sleep. And when he sleeps, I think this ligament heals.

He can go for months without the cherry eye, until when he does something stupid like get too excited, rub his eye on something or ram his face into something or whatever, it pops out.

This seems to be the pattern I've observed on with him.

So, you can't help them from acting crazy and being rough with themselves, but you do what you can, like making sure the eyes don't get irritated by hair.

I hope this helps someone.

Just to let you all know my 5 month Bulldog Puppy Pucca got this on both eyes, 4 weeks ago, I massaged her eyes according to some videos on Youtube and bingo! problem solved!, but when she went to the vet, she got it again and the vet recommended surgery. As she's my baby girl and I won't let anyone touch her and much less put anesthesia on her, I kept looking on the web and came to this post.

I'll tell you a couple of things, I’ll be glad if this helps get your anxiety down:

  • It kept coming twice or three times a day for a week, I kept massaging her eyes three times a day for the first week, like a 5 minute massage with a warm damp (she didn't have the cherry eye some of the time but I still did it).
  • Heat as recommended in the post works like a charm lubricating her eye three times a day also worked to have much better smoothness.
  • Don't apply too much pressure but do feel the cartilage when reaching the nose so you can feel it returning to site and change to a relaxing massage, if you don’t feel it don’t panic just keep doing that movement in circles as if you wanted just to relax and sleep your Pup.
  • Use baby wipes and baby powder to clean your puppy's face everyday. This may help eliminate some of the following two factors.
  • Be careful of grass seeds and other allergie seasonal factors.
  • Observe if anxiety or physical impacts cause the reaction.
  • If confirmed, avoid any of the previous two scenarios for your puppy and ask your vet for anti inflammatory drops to help if he/she (And you) are having a hard time with recurrency.

Pucca has 2 weeks free of cherry eyes, and last time I spotted one on her it was pink and just took a warm baby wipe and tummy rub to get back to position (Not even the massage anymore). So thank you Alex and Lulu!!

Our Newfoundland puppy is 5 months old, had the cherry eye, first vet thought it was conjunctivitis, after that didn't clear up they diagnosed it was cherry eye. had the surgery probably 3 weeks ago, all was well and then it popped out yesterday. I might try this procedure but it scares me a little. Any suggestions?

Hi stephanie. If your pups cherry eye remains unresolved, i highly recommend you try this treatment. It does require a bit of effort though. I applied warm compresses to my dog's closed eye 5x/ daily, 3 minutes per application. Then, with the lightest pressure, sweep your thumb over the closed eye from the outer corner to the inner corner. You'll feel the eyeball roll under the lid moving from outside in bc the point is to get the cherry eye to pop back into the eye socket. Repeat this massage technique about 4-5x after each application of warm compresses. Finally follow up with lubricating eye drops which you can apply 2x daily. After 2 days of this regimen, my dogs cherry eye was resolved,Surgery averted. Also, Lubricating your dog's eye daily is a great preventive to avoid future issues. I found tachrolimus compounded in coconut oil to be the best lubricating eye drops and your vet can easily prescribe this. Hope this helps and good luck!

My 5 month old Shih Tzu has had a cherry eye for about 2 weeks now. Have been waiting on surgical Appt for a week. He is scheduled for surgery day after tomorrow. When I first mentioned to my sister that he had cherry eye she sent me an article about massaging the eye to get rid of the cherry eye. I too have read so many people who have found your method of correcting cherry eye in their pets. The pup I have an Olde Eglish Bulldogge had a cherry eye gland pop up this AM. I Googled this issue and your blog came up. I have heard of this method on another site related to Frenchie Bulldogs. Your instructions are great. I used eye drops to moisten the eye and massaged it back into place. I checked it again later that morning it had popped out again, so the process done again and it popped back in. I'll continue to monitor this 3-month pup of mine. She is sleeping in her crate at present, I do thank you for your great contribution on home remedies for the cherry eye. Vets are way too expensive for this operation with not all too often long-lasting good results. I too am not flushed with funds and it is a real blessing for so many people's dogs to be corrected of the cherry eye. In a lot of cases, the breeders of dogs affected by this issue should review the dogs that they are breeding. Reconsidering the stock that they are using. There would be a lot fewer dogs out there with this predisposition. Finally, simply thank you for your blog post. I just pray that it doesn't pop back out again. That this is the end of Cherry Eye. Thanks, Elizabeth Gardner

My 12 week old Boston/Chihuahua puppy had this happen two weeks ago to her left eye and I should have been more persistent as the tear gland has been out and is redder because of being exposed to the air. She bolts when I try to put a vet prescribed Prednisone drop in her eye.
Today this happened to her other eye. She let out a little yelp. She wasn't playing hard just standing on her hind legs with front paws against the window looking outside when it happened.
I bundled her in a towel to stop her from jumping out of my arms, washed my hands and holding her while I was standing in front of the mirror to see her face, gently pushed / slid the gland back down in and down toward the inner corner of her eye. Success! I was fortunate to have done it in 3 seconds without massage and within minutes of it happening.

I suspect that short- snouted breeds with inadequate sinus drainage are prone to this. Allergies?

thank you for this article. We have a one yr English Bulldog and her cherry eye, although small has been protruding for a month. We did take her to the vet, she said no surgery needed. When I started reading about "cherry eye," because of my unusual medical condition and knowledgd... I automatically thought two things: strengthen the tissue and tendons and massaging should help the blood reach and cleanse and heal.

I dont normally do these things, but to give thanks for your advice I'd like to offer you info and home remedies you can make that I would think would be literally perfect for the ailment.

Coconut/cilantro/Rosemary oil reduces inflammation and helps blood circulate when used with shea/cocobutter promotes rapid cellular growth/repair... buckthorn oil helps with lubricating glands, with a rare omega fat and super high with uncommon antioxidants.

In his food, Norwegian kelp, dulce, inulines, [gotu cola, grass-fed hydrolized collagen + buckthorn (high in tritophane and makes complete protein), vitamin c helps collagen synthesis]

Anyway, email me if you'd like the recipe. I did my best to NOT be that asshole taking up space for no reason... and I don't want to mention. It and make u dig around for the simple info.

You'll LOVE THESE SIMPLE ADDITIONS. I used the oil for everything, from reducing pain, carrier oil, my baby teething...

I stumbled on your post after scouring the internet to find a remedy for cherry eye, which I didn't know what that was at the time. Our pug/terrier puppy ended up with one a few weeks ago. Well, your post gave us comfort and reassuranceand the cherry did end up going back in - phew! Well, yesterday morning, the same thin happened only this time the massage didn't work - crud! I did remember that I'd also read I could give the puppy a dose of the homeopathic remedy, Belladonna, which I did and this morning the cherry eye is gone! So, I just wanted to share this bit of information in case it helps yourselves or any of your readers... anyone who finds your post. Cheers!

My 6 month old Small Breed Puppy had her third eyelid pop out last evening for the first time. I flushed it with eye rinse, gave her ketorolac eye drops and followed that with eye lubricant. We went to bed and when we woke up her cherry eye was gone. So far so good!
